This flat top was a lot of work but it was worth it. First the canvas
covering had to go, too far gone to save. Then the wood beneath was very
rough, not dressed as almost all trunks are. So this meant hours of scraping
and sanding to get the finish we wanted. One unusual thing about this trunk
is the handles, they are original but most trunks this type had leather
handles. Also, it's one of very few we've ever seen with the handle on
the front. The original lock with its brass escutcheon
is still there and works. A solid brass key is furnished. Both the pine
background wood and oak staves have a nice pretty grain. Flat top trunks
that are truly flat are becoming harder to find all the time, in fact this
is one of only a very few we have left. This one is just the height for a
coffee table that would be both historic and beautiful with lots of storage
