(Sold) Rear Views of Beautiful 1850s Jenny Lind W/Brass-Clad Straps (Sold)

Arguably, the most beautiful trunk design ever and named for one of the world's most beloved performers, Jenny Lind - The Swedish Nightingale. The original superstar, Jenny was discovered and brought to America by P. T. Barnum in the 1850s to tour. Although she only toured the East Coast, her popularity inspired the naming of a town in California for her. Soon streets and buildings all over, furniture of all kinds, even kitchen devices were blessed with her name. (She was extremely popular in Europe too; she's the only female mentioned in the Poet's Corner of Westminster Abbey in London; Hans Christian Anderson wrote songs for her; a polka was written and named for her.) The trunks she used on her tour were quickly copied by makers world-wide and now are the most collectable of all. Most of the trunks were made with metal straps painted black but the ultimate examples have straps covered in thick brass. These have become the very most sought after trunks. The brass on this particular trunk is enhanced by several black rosettes, all original. In fact everything is original on this trunk except the new lining, leather lid stay and lid lifter. The handles are of hardwood and still very strong. Note the soft, warm colors in the pine wood with the knots adding character and beauty. The hardwood staves are grooved and beautifully grained. Note too the lock with the keyhole cover that swings open. Inside the trunk is a lid compartment, fully restored.
