| Sole leather trunks were
very popular back in the 1860s and most had artwork inside but this one
has, without a doubt, the nicest artwork we've ever seen in a trunk of any
type. When we first spotted it from a distance we thought someone had done
a wonderful job of restoring the artwork but then on closer examination we
found it all original! From the pretty young lady with flowers to the
lace-like intricate blue border, it's all untouched except for a tiny bit
of aging here and there. The same blue border continues on the original
tray. The panel holding the main artwork is a hinged compartment within
the lid of the trunk. It can be unlatched by spring pulls on each side to
fold down and then open from the back. The tray also opens to reveal even more
storage space for personal items. Below the tray is lots more space to
store larger articles. All the metal trim on this trunk is solid brass.
We've left about 140 years of patina on the brass. The solid brass lock
has a patent date of 1864. We've left the original handles on since they
add so much but we don't advise lifting the trunk by them, doing so would
just be asking too much for handles so old. The remainder of the leather
is in very good condition, we've cleaned and treated it with several
