Simulated Canvas Embossed Pattern

Antique trunk simulated canvas embossed pattern

This pattern is a bit of an enigma. The majority of flat top trunks were covered in canvas but some were covered in tin that had a simulated canvas pattern stamped into it. Surely canvas was cheaper so maybe the thinking was that the tin would last better than canvas. This has not usually been the case though since the real canvas was coated with several layer of shellac and it lasted very well. The tin however tended (no pun intended) to rust so most flat tops with real canvas have stood the tests of time better than the tin covered ones.
