Many thanks to E. B. in Montreal, Quebec
![]()
An inventor from San Francisco received an American patent in 1916 for a vehicle camping attachment with the description: “box like structure interiorly of which is mounted a plurality of hinged & extensible sections containing compartments for the reception of various articles such as a stove, cooking utensils, groceries, guns, fishing tackle etc., & which also contains a bed which is adapted to be extended & enclosed when in use.” This may have been the earliest version of a motor home. Thanks to Jed Clampett for the use of his auto for the illustration.
